Samatha Buddhist Meditation in Cambridge

Samatha meditation

This is a form of meditation which uses a focus on the breath as a way of controlling, calming and ultimately understanding the mind. It is a traditional Thai meditation technique, which has been taught in Cambridge since 1963.

Samatha newcomers' classes provide a systematic introduction both to the meditation itself and to basic meditation theory, which helps in developing the practice. Although this is a structured course which enables people to gradually build up their practice, newcomers can join at any time. Meditation is individual to each meditator, and keeps on developing and deepening over time, so guidance and discussion are provided not only in the group, but also on a one-to-one basis. We recognise that for those interested in pursuing it, this process is an on-going and perhaps long-term one, so that anyone who wishes to continue after the beginners' course will have another group they can attend and a teacher they can continue contact with.
